Taking Control of my Time with Universal Time

Done with switching clock back or forward 1 hour

Here in America, the US is coming up on the day where they move their clocks 1 hour back, on some random day in November. A switch from "daylight savings time" to "standard time". And then on some random day in March, the opposite is done. I am done with this craziness. I refuse to change my clocks anymore and be apart of this ritual. Daylight savings time was created as something to "help" with war efforts during World War I. There are documented studies of this practice, switching clocks back and forth every year, being bad for health and everyone in general. In a way, detaching us from nature.

Willingness to go against local standards

I live in an area that others say is apart of the "central time zone". Here, the time zone is offset -6 hours from "coordinated universal time" during "standard time" and offset -5 hours during "daylight savings time". If I am willing to stop switching the offset, this means choosing one offset. Looking at a time zone map, the official offset for the area is -6. Staying with a -6 offset during the year means half the year my clock will be 1 hour different than the people and businesses around. So being "out of sync" with the time of locals is already inherent. Should time even be "offset"? Time zones themselves need to be looked at.

Do time zones make anything better?

time-zones-map.png Time Zones Map - One of the most complicated maps in existence

Some countries have daylight savings, some don't, some states or territories within a country don't (Arizona). Some countries have half hour offsets and even 45 minute offsets for their time zone. Some countries like China span multiple zones but use only one for the whole country. Some countries aren't within the -12 or +12 offset range and decide +14 is good. Etc, etc, etc.

Perhaps since I program I am more attuned to the massive complexity that time zones bring. It is always a painful experience to wrangle it. What are people really gaining by having time that is "zoned"? The best arguments are basically people are used to it and it helps with keeping the sun overhead at "noon". The first point is what it is..

On keeping daylight around noon, is it worth it by keeping the complexity of time zones? And due to what we can see with the time zone map, the sun being overheard at noon is not so simple. Due to the arbitrary choices of time zone offsets, daylight savings, latitude and longitude within the zone, the sun being directly at noon is itself offset. Each country, state, areas within a state, will experience differing positions of the sun in relation to noon.

And like to travel? Then get ready to switch your clocks multiple times, to whatever arbitrary choices the region you are going to decides is the time. We give control of our time to others. And we essentially say certain parts of the world "live in the future", their calendar day is a day ahead right? We can do better than this.

Coordinated Universal Time (UTC)

Let's say 24 hours in a day is cool and fine, with ancient history surrounding it. And instead of zoning time we just pick one time within those 24 hours that everyone sticks to, learning what the hours in relation to daylight are wherever you happen to be at the moment. Well this already exists. Coordinated Universal Time or UTC is the time that all time zones are based on. Their offsets of hours are offset of what the time is in UTC.

UTC is based on the prime meridian. A meridian chosen to represent 0° longitude. The important thing is making a choice on something to represent Universal Time and this has already been done. Entities that need to be coordinated use UTC: militaries use it (calling it Zulu time), global commerce, airlines, shipping, communications, databases, etc, etc all use Universal Time because they can not and should not deal with the complexity of time zones. It allows for unification and simplification of something as fundamental as time itself so action and business can be globally coordinated.

Imagine. One time for your clocks. That never gets shuffled around or have to be changed again. No matter what day of the year it is, no matter where you travel, you'll always know the time, and can rely on it. Yes locals may use a different time, but their time is an offset of your time, just a quick calculation to convert it using their offset. For me, this simplifies a fundamental aspect of life and empowers sovereignty. I work with Cuzos and businesses around the globe. I like to travel. I can do so more seamlessly now and I never have to switch my clock again. This may not work for everyone but for me it does. Anyone else with similar feelings I say try et out!!
